Well my hard drive crashed yesterday. It is toast. Diagonostics don't even recognize the hard drive or dvd rom drive so no possibilty of a boot.

Didn't really lose much. All the pics were backed up in a fire safe. Lost my wife's plant and gardening info she had compiled over the last year. I lost my psp programs.

Good news though, my dad offered to help us get a new computer since the laptop we have as a back up just won't hang at all any more. I took him up on the offer as long as he said it would be a b-day present and not some sort of charity.

Any who he found a compaq that is more or less exactly the same as our HP (infact compaq is not made by HP). The RAM will swap and most of the other hardware will swap as well if I want/need it too. The new pc has windows 7 so hopefully that will be lest "glitchy" than vista.

Any who, live and learn on the back up....I realized that I had free online backup w/ Mozy through my McAfee subscription...all I had to do was set it up. I'm a moron.

So has anyone else killed a computer? This is my first.
-Nick

i've had multiple hard drives go out on me, live and learn... and when you get the chance, upgrade!

I see computers as modular devices; if something goes out, plug a new ( or older one) in. I keep all my old cards/ hard drives, just in case i have to throw them in for a quick fix.

Yup, thats where I'm going to be too now. I need to figure out how to make a Windows 7 disc though. I'm sure this new computer will not come with a Windows reinstall disc. My HP did not come with a Windows Vista disc.

Any recommendations on how to do that?
Thanks,
Nick

you pretty much have to buy one; i wouldnt' trust any torrent download or whatever.

I suppose i should mention that I've never bought a packaged computer. The closest thing i did to that was buying a barebones system, where you have to install everything. That way you have all the software disks you need, and you know exactly what is going in that box. It's also more affordable.

Yeah, I would do that as well but I couldn't pass up a $150 brand new computer w/ a 1 year warranty.

I'll see what I can do to to source a windows 7 disc. Ultimately though, if my wife can do her work and my daughter can play some games I'm good.

I'll fool around with the old pc and see what I can do with it Very Happy fun times.

I thought you could download a burnable disk file right from microsoft (Windows 7) or it's already there.... Actually, I think you just have to make a recovery disk which is included in Windows 7. From there, it's your Key that is on the Microsoft sticker on the laptop, usually on the bottom, that unlocks Windows 7.

I can't say for certain but the recovery disk you make should give you the option to format c: and install windows 7. The manufacturer would have used that key to activate it already. I do know that once a key has been entered and registered with Microsoft it's the motherboard of the computer that is registered and thus is allowed to be reinstalled as many times as needed on that computer.

One of the hacks to steal Windows 7 is to flash your bios to match a pre-registered computer and then use the key provided by the torrent.

Throw your hard drive in the freezer for a few days. If it's a mechanical issue, that may help you recover your wife's gardening stuff. I use an old program called "recover my files"

I have fried alot of stuff, mostly in my teenage years when hardware came and went. Fun fact: when the little black chips start smoking, it smells like burning peanut butter.

While I have not had a hard drive crash on me recently, I have helped friends and family deal with the fall out from a HD crash. It is a difficult thing to tell someone that their pictures, documents, and programs are gone. I had a guy that I took stuff to for data recovery, but he is now on an extend vacation.

I have saved some data from three different drive by freezing them. I put them in a ziploc and then in the freezer. An old IT guy taght me that, he said that the contraction helped open up the tolerances in the bearings and motor. One way or another, it's cheap. I have some pictures that have been rescued a couple of times. Of course, I backup better now. I'm currently using dropbox for online backup and sharing.
