Way back in 98, I bought a 63 Bug out of an old farmer's field for $250. Pretty rough shape with a bad Baja kit on it. My intentions were to restore it in time for my elder sons first car..

Fast forward 12 years and almost zero progress to a brutal realization: there is no way on God's green earth that I am going to 1) spend that kind of money on this car and turn my kid loose in it and 2) finish it, ever.

With those things in mind, add to that my son's love of DDay and my degrading joints. An epiphany of sorts occured. Why not take a German car and make a German tank? And so the journey begins in earnest.

Last weekend I got the engine in the mancave (correct model 1200cc number). This weekend, the boy and I started the teardown process. I will add pics as things progress, along with design plans.

Wish me luck, and poke me if I don't update.

No pics yet, but some progress. Friday I cleaned up the "shop" so that we could get to it. Saturday, we got the old oil drained, generator and fan shroud off, removed the cooling tin, carb, intake, fuel pump, distributor, generator stand, valve covers, rocker arms, heads and cylinders.

The good: engine still turns freely, oil cooler and fuel pump are in good shape, most of the cooling tin is intact.

The bad: need new distrubutor, carb needs rebuilt, need to upgrade the 6 volt generator to a 12 volt alternator, number 1 plug is frozen in the head and someone has been in this engine before.

The last part bothers me, since when they put it back together, they didn't use all the correct washers on the heads. So those will have to be checked for trueness, and the rest we'll figure out this coming weekend when we split the case and start checking out crank and cam bearings and gear lash.

^^not knowing cars I didn't understand most of that, but it sounds like quite a project. Make sure you've got all your johnson rods in there too.

Awesome idea vdub. Man wish I had the spare time. A project with your son is the best spent time ever, no matter what it is doing. My son and i just got done painting a swingset. Sounds tedius but just that quality time with him meant more to him than any birthday or christmas present he has ever gotten. He got to use my sprayer and I taught him some handyman stuff. Just awesome. It probably took twice as long as it should but it was great.

Sound fun, I've never really color cars but I've always loved old air cooled volkswagens. Running this makes me wish I could have keep mine. Even though it seems like alot I'm sure you and your son should have little trouble, there pretty easy to work on.

Is it the pict 34 carb? if so I think I might have a originial VW rebuilt kit you can have. Also think I still have a manual on pdf in my ext hd if you want it.

DefiantK, I wouldn't turn down the manual. My carb is the old 28PICT.

Yesterday we split the case. Uhhhh. Probably going to have the case line bored, and both cam and crank are going to need touched up. Gears are borderline acceptable. Oh well, it's just money. Actually, it won't be much, the largest VW engine shop in the US is about half an hour from my house, and I know their head machinist. So, if I have over 200 in machine work, I'll be suprised.
