Hey, at least all of your stuff was still there in the box. I've seen plenty worse. Yes, it could have been a greedy shipping employee, but it also could have been damage from a machine or some other phenomena.

I worked for a huge package handling hub outside of Chicago. The company is out of business but the building is now owned by FedEx. Efficiency is the name of the game and people are made to stack boxes as fast as possible. Sometimes small, light boxes get sandwiched at the bottoms of stacks and burst under the pressure. Occasionally machines or edges of machinery can trap or catch boxes and tear edges. Heck, I remember pulling little mailers that got trapped in these out of the way nooks and crannys and they had probably been sitting in for months if not more.

I remember that there was a huge conveyor belt with little trays on it that ran around high above the whole warehouse. I worked a route with a few trailers and when the boxes meant to go to my trailers passed by, these trays would tilt and drop the packages into these open chutes that led to my trailers. Sometimes it would get so busy that the chute would overflow with packages and boxes would drop more than 20ft onto the ground. To unjam the chute, I would literally have to step on all the boxes as I crawled up to the top of the chute and kick and punch boxes out of the way to unjam the chute. Then the fun part would be riding the boxes down the chute after they'd be unjammed.

Yup, I never meant to do bad things. But it was either lovingly care for a few single boxes and get fired because I wasn't stacking boxes fast enough, or get rough with a few of them and keep the bosses happy.

To ensure your package makes it somewhere okay

1. MAKE THE SHIPPING ADDRESS LEGIBLE AND STRAIGHTFORWARD. I can't stress that enough. I worked with some dumb individuals in that job. Probably the dumbest I'd ever encountered.

2. Package it at home and throw it against the wall and step on it. Is everything inside okay and the box integrity okay? Then it's okay to ship.

3. Get insurance if it matters at all to you.

Yeah.... I worked for RPS before the FedX takeover and then worked for FXGround. I also worked at UPS. I know all about package handling "skills".

if i remember correctly, the box was more or less ripped open, not just split because of a thin box. i'm sure that someone did take a peak at it. can i prove anything, no. its just that i hope someone learns to package things appropriately.
