PostPosted: Thu Aug 27, 2009 1:48 pm    Post subject: Newerish paintball guns and ramp mode?

So a few weekends ago I went out to my local PB Field and played for the second time, woodsball. There were quite a few players on the other team with some of the newerish pb guns inverts, ions, angel and a marq. They were all owned by a crew that played together and it was obviously that they were s'ballers.

On my side were all non speedballers and casual players including three mothers (god bless them for actually joining in the game play with their kids).

The s'ballers worked well as a team and they were coordinated in their clearing out of their section of the field in play. They were covering all the cross angles and I admit that I was caught several times having to fend off multiple players, the end result was me getting tagged out the majority of the time. I had a great time.

But...on the other hand, I have to ask are the newweish guns these days, just THAT FAST or do these guns have boards with a ramping feature on them. The s'ballers when tagging people out, they were hitting them not once but 6 or 7 times. There wasn't an occasion when I wasn't marked an dhad my hands up to get out of the firefight, where I wasn't tagged an additional 3 or 4 times. I don't want to cry poor sportsmanship, but the moms on my team in the afternoon started to get frustrated as they were being hit multiple times after raising their hands.

Additionally one of the ladies was hit square on the top of the head as she was crawling for position and when she got up with her hands and marker up they laced into her. I ended up complaining to their refs after watching the guy on the other team call the mom a b**** and said he was going to shoot her while everyone had their masks off in the safe zone.

I'm just trying to get a sense of whethere or not these guys were just a)a bunch of dirt bags b) that guns these days are just that fast in semi-auto c) they triggered ramp modes in their guns and couldn't help that 5 or 6 extra balls met their target.

I'm a little cynical as I was in a bunker and hit had my hand up for the better part of 15 seconds and was calling myself out when they were still lacing into my location. The ref had to jump in in order for me to get out safely. And the others on my team had the same situation.

I have to say, that while I'll still be playing, its a sorry state of paintball though, when teenage boys and middle age men gang up on a bunch of moms. If I see them again, as I'm sure I will, I'll make sure I'm on the opposite team every time, because what I believe they did is unacceptable. It puts a bad taste in people's mouths who either don't have a thick skin for the sport or are new to it.

Yeah sounds like you were dealing with some pretty crappy players there.

Alot of times you will get "over shot" only because the paint is alreay in the air. However, 6-7 hits is very very excessive and is purposeful.

I whole heartidly suggest you speak with the owner of the field about the conduct of the players you were playing against. Refs usually are kids and don't care about what adults say to them. However, the owners do (or the should) care about the conduct of the players on the field.

Our home field is a family place. We do not cater to speedball and have a great atmosphere of sportsmanship.

You will get the hotshots that thing they are better than you and feel like big men cause the cuss and threaten people. Most of these kids are little weasles and in a fair fight would curl up in a fetal possition. My experience has been to make all attempts to mentor these kids. I play and lead by example when ever I can.

If I'm staged next to a hot shot thats doggin someone I come to bat for that dogged kid. I'm 30 and making friends with 12 year olds. In the end, it is the adults that need to make sure that the fields are safe and friendly. It is the owner's responsibility make sure that the field has repeat business. If he realizes that people are playing and acting like that I'm sure he will nip it in the bud. Our owners have banned quite a few people for life for that junk.

Oh and guns these days don't have to ramp to send out a hail of paintballs. I can feather the trigger on my Vice and it just spews paint...no ramping at all.

Good luck, keep us abreast of how things change.

Sounds like you ran into a classic case of A) a bunch of dirtbags with a good possibiity of C) ramp/bounce. I don't believe in B) as there hasn't been a whole lot of newness in paintball markers, just new looks. Mags, when they are set up are still some of the fastest markers out there, as are Vikings.
I feel you were also let down by your refs and management. It's the refs job to handle that kind of crap and to make sure the teams are split up fairly. You put a bunch of speedballers together, they turn into a pack of feral dogs and start raping in pillaging as they can. You split them up and they try to go against each other and sometimes offer good advice to newer players.

Sorry it happened, and sorry several new players won't be back because of it. That's the sport choking itself out.

The nail has been hit directly on the head right there.

It really is unfortunate, its such a fun game. My GF swore she would never play she's getting her MBA in accounting right now and she is in class four days a week from 8AM to 6 and all she can think about is the weekend of paintballer as its a stress reliever for her. So we'll be going back. I'm gong to send an email to the owners today to make sure they understand that they have to retrain their refs, in general the ones at Skirmish are very good and they responded by getting the owner of the field involved last week. When a kid threatens a mom and uses profanity directly to her face right in front of the group of adults he is playing with, something has to be done. He was a middle class kid most likely privliged all dudded out in Abercrombie and Fitch so there is no reason for him to have not been taught manners.

I on the other hand like my girlfriend came from lesser backgrounds and put ourselves through grad school and have an all right life now. I just can't believe how some folks can be. I'm 34 and would never have treated a mom in the way that he did even when I was younger.

I'm so glad that I've nerve ran across people like that at any place I've played. there's always a risk for things to get a bit hairy on the field, but after the game is over you all talk it out and it goes back to being about fun again. If you show respect, you will usually get it back in return. If you don't, it may be time to talk to the owner or find a new place to play.

I did snap at a guy once; it had nothing to do with paintball though. I left a box of Triscuts by my gear and he took it, claiming it was his; mind you This was the only food i had to eat all day long and it was close to 10pm. I don't think he expected me to snap and promptly returned them:D He was a real **** about it though.

Definately D-bags, moreover they exhibit lack of control.

I get really irritated with D-bags that don't make it fun for newbs...newbs are the future of the sport, they forget that it's the newb b-day party that helps keep the doors open so fatties like us can come run around and shoot each other.

about two months ago a newb bunkered me because my newb 10yo son wasn't covering the other side of the bunker. Dude ripped into my left inner thigh with what felt like half a hopper full.....he was only maybe 6 feet away....I'm not too proud to surrender if your that close....I yelled at him a little. He appologized later and all was well. My leg only just started looking normal again last week!I'm easy to get along with if you observe the rules and are courtious...just my 2 cents. Smile
