Hey, anyone have experience w/ old Jeep trucks and/or wagoneers?

I have the chance to pick up a 1979 Jeep J10 truck for $500. It will need new tires and hasn't been started in probably 6-7 years.

I'm pretty sure I can pull the air filter, spray some gas in the carb and get the engine cranked. Its an old slant 6 engine and they are pretty tuff.

The jeep is a one-owener. The old man purchased it new in 1979 and used it for a farm truck just up the road from me. Its never been up north so no salt damage. It evidently has some rust but thats something that can be dealt with.

Any who does anyone have any experience w/ these old trucks or have some good information sites I can look at? I figure for $500 I can't really lose. Restored these things are pushing $15K. Working in good condition, they push $5k.

Well I didn't get it. It was a 1975 model. The floors were completely rusted out and the tires were toast. He couldn't find the key so the ignition would have to be replaced just to make sure the engine would fire.

For $500 I just couldn't justify the effort and time that it would take to make it drivable let alone something I might put my wife or daughter in.

Such is life, I'll find me a truck eventually, no rush right now.

Jeez no faith, 500$ would have been a steal for that around here at least for me it would be. I was looking for a jeep pickup for a while. Ended up picking up a Jeep comanche for 300$

Here a link for FSJ (Full size jeep) www.ifsja.org/

If you can weld floors are easy, just check for frame issues and other common rust spots. You can have a lock smith re make you a key for like 50-100$ around here.

Was it 2wd or 4wd?

It was 4WD. I realize that in the grand scheme of things it wasn't a bad deal as a project truck. The thing is I don't need a project truck. I just don't have the time to invest into it to make it run and look good.

This truck was in much ruffer shape than I'm presenting it. It has sat for 7+ years. Assume the truck was $500, I know I'd have to spend at least $250 on tires (probably more). The carb will have to be rebuilt. All hoses, spark plugs, and plug wires will have to be replaced. The floors will need to be welded.

That is all before its even street worthy. This is assuming that the transmission, 4x4 transfer case, and diffs are in good shape. If they are toast which I won't know until I do all the above work, I could be in it another $1000-$1500 plus all the time.

I can do basic work and if I just wanted a project it would be great. I need a working 4x4 truck and the jeep would not be that. Its too bad too, I really would have like to have it. If the engine would have ran and it had tires, I would have paid $700 for it. Its just too hard to tell how much money would need to be sunk into it.

Such is life though.

Yeah, that would be some fun but a lot more work than I would have time for also.
