PostPosted: Tue May 03, 2011 3:39 pm    Post subject: Tank reg install

So, I've only ever really installed crossfire tank regs in the past. Since the have a "hex" head on them we stuck 'em in a vice and put a strap wrench on the tank.

I've got this new Ninja reg waiting for me at home and I want to go ahead and install it. I plan to use blue loctite and a strap wrench on the reg to tighten it down.

Is is appropriate? How do you guys normally install the cylindrical tank regs without damaging the regs or having to remove all fittings??

Thanks,
nick

i was always told that loctite or any sealant is over kill with regs. unless the reg is very loose on the bottle, there is no need. it can get in the air passages, and is a detriment to having the tank rehydro'd(since they need to remove the reg to do the testing) and if you needed to travel with the tank in your luggage, if traveling by plane.

in the one tank i've changed regs, it screwed on without sealant and i have never had it unscrew or loosen in any shape, way or form.

maybe practices have changed since i came back, but that's how i roll. never had a hydro place do it, and its my scuba shop as well. maybe us Jersey boys know enough to NOT mess with it, since we don't use the sealant.

If you plan on traveling with it on planes then no loctite, If not then use a little blue loctite.

I've been told directly by the hydro guys, 'no loctite'. I don't think a little would hurt though.

I've changed dozens of regs, I don't use loctite, a little bit of torque from my 6 foot 280 lb frame and them regs ain't going no where's.

We have a reg block from cp, it fits most regs, slide block into vise, clamp, screw reg onto tank, insert reg into block, twist tight, viola, the air pressure will keep it on there, if your tank is empty, you can sometimes take the reg off by hand, perfect for flying and hydro.

I've always used a couple pieces of wood in the vice and clamped the reg in that. Then strapwrench the bottle on. No loctite.
