The problem with walmart ammo is it's either very old stock or more than likely Chinese manufacture (it happens to many brand name stuff that walmart sells Ex. Colgate tooth paste with anti-freeze in it....). About a month ago a guy at the firing range was using Winchester ammo he bought from walmart. The percussion of firing the gun set off a round in the magazine. He wasn't hurt too bad but still needed medical attention, thank god for an alloy frame.

I always see excess powder burn fouling when I get lazy and buy cheap walmart ammo for a day of shooting. Their Remington .223 ammo throws clouds of smoke out of the barrel of my AR. Never buying ammo there again though. We started loading .223/5.56 as well.

I'm sorry this is just innaccurate and unsubstantiated.

There is no difference between the ammo winchester sells to wal-mart and the ammo they sell to any other local gun store. to say otherwise is simply misinformed and demonizing wal-mart for doing nothing more than buying in bulk so they can sell cheap. Even if it was a bit old, so what? what is "old"? 6 months? a year??? I pulled out 2 boxes of 9mm after sitting for 10 years and every round shot fine.... so I ask, what is "old"? I bet the ammo Wal-mart is selling isn't 10 years old.... I'm sure it's not any older than the winchester ammo sitting on the shelf at your local gun store.

My brother in law had a Winchester .308 round go off halfway in the breach of his AR-10... ammo did not come from Wal-mart.

^ Don't forget religion.

As far as Wal-Mart ammo, i've shot thousands of rouinds of Wichester white box and Federal in 3 different calibers and not one problem.
It certainly news to me that Wals-Mart sells old ammo when they can't even keep them in stock due to people buying them all up. Hell, even old surplus corrosive ammo goes bang even after 40+ years of storage.

Say what you want. I find more inconsistency with ammos bought threw walmart then I do with others. And yes, walmart will buy cheap stuff with known issues because they can still turn a dime. Lets say water damage, most of the stuff will be good but there can be lingering high humidity issues. I've unloaded walmart trucks, If it doesn't look good enough to sell they will write it off but the box above could look fine and they put it on the selves. This is why you get DOA stuff some times especially with electronics. They pack everything together.

I do shoot surplus 8mm Mauser ammo and know it can be reliable, but they have crimped or sealed primers and a military crimp on the bullet. Most cheap bulk ammo you buy do not have these features.

if it's just target ammo who cares as long as it's cheap.

i'm wit p8ntballdad.. funny how wally-worlds ammo is old but they can't keep it on the shelves.

but there is always some opinionated fart who will tel you different and expect you to swallow it like gospel.

that's why i say the only opinion that matters is YOUR OWN.. everyone else can go leap.

Wal-Mart is one of my biggest customers, I deal mostly with truckloads of refrigerated product but we haul dry also and believe me, they will reject anything on the load that is even close to bad, we easily pay out 6 figures a year in claims and that doesn't even include the stuff they have us bring back to the shipper because it was their fault.

What is really funny is I have always had great results with the JT Elite paint at Wal-Mart. You would think it sits there forever but it doesnt and I rarely get any with dimples or anything, it isn't the most brittle stuff out there but it has bright thick fills and is only $35/case. Especially good for when I play rec ball. Closest thing I can get at a store a Valken redemption for $37 and it is not quite as good as the JT Elite.
