PostPosted: Sun Jul 15, 2012 11:08 pm    Post subject: My family is a living episode of Jerry Springer. Story Time!

Wow, where to begin.

So, as some of you might already know, last wednesday, my great grandma took a tumble (well, actually, she had pneumonia, an then had a stroke at the top of a flight of stairs) and sadly passed away. I was at funeral services/family gathering all weekend, and quite of few noteworthy things happened.

Just some details surrounding everything:
My great grandma was 98 years old, and outlived all three of her husbands.
On account of just being alive for so long, and widowing all her husbands, she was incredibly wealthy. Like, millions wealthy (this comes into play later).
She has 9 kids, 17 grandkids, and like 20 something great-grandkids

So, now that those details are out of the way, on to the actual events.

My mom went down early, so tell make arrangements and everything. She met up with her mom, brother, and everyone else from that side of the family (they're all from florida, the service was in ohio). My dad, brother and I drive up later. Unbeknownst to me, my dad had given her a gun (because the funeral was in crackville, ohio).

My mom calls, and says that we need to get there fast. Some of the siblings were arguing over the will. Turns out, she had stated in her will, that her children would get nothing, and the money would be handed out to her grandchildren when all of her kids had died. Naturally, that caused an uproar. Especially when they found her secret ledger that she had recorded all of the money everyone had ever borrowed from her. Turns out some people were in to her for more than $400,000.

My mom was the one who found the ledger, and when the the biological children found out (my mom is a grandchild) they threatened to physically assault her. They claimed that she has forged the ledger in order to take all the money (or something) and bottom line, my mom had to pull a gun on her uncles and aunts.

Crazy what money does to people. We stayed for the service, and then promptly got out of there.

I will be getting a substantial amount of money...once my grandparents die (in accordance to the will). But, that generation has some people in it that are as young as 50, so it could be another 30-40 years before I see any of it.

I did get some old audio equipment though. We got to pilfer her house, and amongst all the nonsense in there, there were a few gems.

Dude, that sucks. We're dealing with much that same in my wife's family (but without the money or material goods) and I have had to tell her cousins and uncles that if they step on my property, they will never step off. It's stupid how things can get so crazy over nothing.

I feel you. As an onlooker, it was really awful. But, fortunately, she has been in decking health for years, and we had all pretty much made peace with her inevitable passing. So it wasn't a big sad affair, at least.

Holy crap, wish I could have been a fly on the wall... Just kidding ... You will never, ever here me say, "Now I've seen everything"; because human depravity I have painfully learned, knows no bounds.

it goes to show you when someone dies, it isn't the loss of a loved one that matters, its what they get. people suck, even if they are family.

also, if and when Nik gets his inheritance, it just means that the Bushmaster market will become another black hole, with everything good coming to him. Wink

^Probably true.

It does bizarre things to people. I have seen it happen on a couple of different occasions, within my family and my mom's clients (she is an enrolled agent and has been an estate executor). I have not seen it go as extreme as what Colin mentioned.

Do you guys have an executor of the estate or whatever?

Yeah, the executor was her oldest son, the one that borrowed 400k from her. So he has probably the worst decision.
