I've been shopping for some quality kitchen knives for some time. I wanted something not made in China. I was looking at the sets from high-end Henckels or the Wusthof. (Henckels has been diluting its brand. Most stuff in the stores is made in China. Some of the "International" sets are made in Spain)

This afternoon I bought a 4-piece Henckels "S" series for $180. It seemed too much to me. I wasn't really satisfied with the purchase.

I went the Leesburg Outlet mall and started shopping around there. In " Le Gourmet Chef" they were selling a 7-piece Wusthof Classic for $200. I was interested in buying it, but they were sold out.

I noticed the 10-piece Wusthof set. I asked the guy helping us about that one, and he said it was $230. I was considering it, when he said that since the one I wanted was sold out, I would get 20% off the 10 piece. I took it.

When the cashier scanned the knives, it rang up initially at $400. After he applied all the price corrections and discounts, I was paid $178 out the door. MSRP is $664. I had to keep a straight face as I was checking out. I got a great deal on a fantastic set of knives.

I'd put lentils in the slow cooker this morning, so there was nothing to slice/chop tonight. I guess I have to wait until tomorrow!

Oh, and I returned the unopened 4-piece set Wink

Heh. I had a friend in college who made good money selling Cutco door-to-door.

Another friend's grandmother had a set of Cutco's that she'd purchased from a salesman a decade prior. They were still working for her just fine.

As for Ron Pompeil... he's one hell of a salesmen, but his knives leave something to be desired Wink

I am personally a fan of Kershaw knives. Made in Japan. I got a 8 piece set in South Africa about 15 years ago and it's still the best I've ever used (and I worked as an assistant chef in college). I'm always on the look out for a new set (since I gave that set as a gift to my mom).

I have some Kershaw pocket knives made in the US. An Onion I usually keep in my back pocket when I'm not at work, and a Craftsman-branded Scallion that sits beside me here at work.

I didn't look at their kitchen knives. In fact, I didn't even know they made them.

As far as "pocket" Knives go I have a benchmade, and it is one of the best knives I have ever used. my dad is partial to queen steel, but I have never been able to find one in the last 10 years.... if I could find some I would have to grab them.

As far as kitchen knives go, mine are cheap. I would love to get a few nice knives for the kitchen. I love to cook so it would be a good investment, if only i could get my gas range back... I Hate cooking with electric, I want the flame.

I don't know much about knives besides they hurt, although i do find hunting/combat knives interesting.
