PostPosted: Tue Aug 08, 2006 9:50 am    Post subject: Is paintball the most expensive thing in your life?

Ok here's the thing, I am a 26 year old young professional (I'm a social worker), I have been married for 5 years and I have 2 kids. Oh I also work 2 jobs so that my wife can stay at home with the children (who are 1 & 3). But I obsess over paintball, over gear and gadgets and everything else associated with the sport. I get to play like two or three times a year (which both me AND my wife are hoping will change soon- yes she actually likes my playing- cuz I take the stress out at the field instead of home). Anyway back on subject, I play 2-3 times a year and have over 1000 invested in gear and countless hours tinkering and fooling with stuff (not including time spend online helping others and getting help myself). So here's the question:

How much does paintball cost you each month?

This is how I want you to get your number:
1. Take the amount of money you have spent on gear over the past 6-12 months and divide that by that number of months.
2. Take the amount of time you spend at the field each month and multiply that times half your hourly wage at work (if you don't work, use 3.00 per hour- that's half minimum wage).
3. Take the amount of time you spend at home tinkering on your gear each month (or each week x 4) and multiple the number of hours by half your pay rate.
4. Take the number of hours you spend online talking about paint ball and such and multiply this by 1/4 your hourly rate (since you would probably be spending some portion of your time online anyway, we can't consider this a 100% paintball related cost.).
5. Add on the amount you actually spend at the field each month.

Now add those 4 values together and tell me what you have. If you are still confused then let me give you an example:

1. Total gear purchased in 6 months / 6: (684/6)= $114 per month
2. Time at field 6 hours every 4 months: 1.5 hrs * 15/hr = 22.50 per month
3. Time tinkering on gear each month: 4 hrs/week=16hrs/mo *$15/hr= $240
4. Time on computer: 3 hrs per day each week= 60 hrs/mo*$7/hr= $420
5. $ spent at field $50 every 4 mo= $12/mo

Total value of cash and time spent each month on PB= $808.50

Oh and for those of you wondering why we are adding in time....because time is money. If you think your free time is worth more than half your payrate then use that number. I just want to see what everyone thinks once they put this number on paper.

Probally.

I only spend $50 or less becuase usually I'm just buying paint. Right now I'm actually at 0 becuase I can't get rid of the case and a half i still have.

I was in the same boat...you know spending like $50 each time at the field...it's the time that costs ya.

Np. Paintball is the second most expensive thing in my life.

The first would be my smoking habit. Rolling Eyes
