PostPosted: Mon Feb 23, 2004 4:53 pm    Post subject: Flurry Ultraback Tactical Vests Review

First Impressions - Out of the box
I just orderd 2 of the flurry ultraback vests and they arrived in a nice box with adequate packaging to insure safe arrival. First imppressions of the vests are pretty good. They are constructed of heavy duty ballistic nylon. All the seams are double sewn at al the high stess points and feel very durable. There is a nice embroiderd detail on the front with the companie's name in black and olive green. It doesnt stand out alot which was a concern of mine. It is actually quite tactful and looks good on the vest. The inside lining of the vests is made of webed material that is slightly padded for comfort but not bulky.

The front of the vest is comprised of 3 pockets. 2 vertical pockets that close with velcro and have tabs for easy opening. 1 semi oval pocket across the top with zippers all the way around and one small zipper on the side for poeple using radios. You can route the earbud wires through this small side zipper and keep your radio inside the pocket. There is also a loop fasterner on the left front sholder for your goggles. I'm not sure how comfortable it will be to have your goggles swhinging from your vest but Its a nice touch.

The back of the vest is pretty plain but very well thought out. Flurry has incorporated thier Ultraback modular system into this vest. 3/4 of the back is covered in velcro which is used to attach the various ultraback accessories. The standard vest comes with 3 modules. 2 pod modules and 1 remote tank module. The pod modules have been completely redesigned and can now support up to 3 140rd tubes each and have built in "rip" cords for easy access to the pods. The tank module can fit any size tank and has plenty of straps and velcro to hold it in place. All of these modules attach to the vest via velcro. This was another concern of mine. I had doubts as to wether velcro was a wise choice on somehting that would get so much abuse. If the amount of force required to pry the modules off the vest is any indication as to thier strudiness well lets just say I almost needed 2 people to "peel" one of the pod modules off. This velcro is shall I say velcro on crack! these things are NOT coming off, moving around, or getting loose. I talked to a few people who have been using thier vests for at least a year and they assured me that the velcro is not a concern. This flexability is one of the great features of this vest. I can have any number of combinations of pod holders, tank holder, and othe accessories that will soon be available like a hydration system. You can position your pod holders vertically or horizontally. It's scalable, you can attach only one module and carry 3 pods or attach up to 3 modules and carry 9 pods. Its as easy as peel and stick.

The vest is an over the head vest. To put the vest on you swing it over your head and fasten the sides using wide velcro kidney straps. The shoulder straps are also velcro and can be adjuste to fit almost any size person and it can be made to ride high or low on your sholders. the side straps are nice and wide and feel comfortable and sturdy when adjusted properly. Flurry also makes extender straps that pretty much allows the vest to fit any size person. My wife is very pettite (I wont say how tall or how heavy, im smarter than that lol), and I'm 6'1" 220lbs so we will be testing the fulll range of adjustability.

These are just my observations out of the box. stay tuned for a fiield review after the Band of Brothers game. If I'm going to find any flaws I'm sure it will be after a solid 24hrs of testing in field conditions.

Toklas.. you really.. REALLY need to contact Robert Daugherty at COPS911.

Tell him you want to demo not the Dead by Dawn vest, but his COPS-1 vest. it's 100% configurable, nothing is locked into place.. It's one of the best vests out there, beats Flurry for configurability hands-down, and offers a much larger platform.

I know he's using it for his other tactical gear - i.e. he didn't start as a paintball gear mfg; his roots are in law enforcement, and he makes LBV's for military/paramilitary.

<smile> If you want, take a look at the vest..

www.cops911.com/category.asp?id=94

Yes.. that *is* my name. I helped him design the COPS system.

Another FYI.. Flurry's scared of this guy.. after his COPS system started getting more and more exposure, they registered www.cop911.com to redirect to THEIR site. Not terribly nice.

If you want more pics, just say the word.. I have Vest #1, and I think every attachment except the camelback sleeve..

Hmmmm....

That would be either Arc Angel, or CIA.. I don't know Arc Angel (although they bought a template site from me), and I do know CIA.. now THOSE are some stand-up fellas.

Yup. Isn't that convenient? Smile

I just hope it all ends up being a misunderstanding..

Actually Caltrop Guerrillas. we are on the west coast. They are also some of the most respectible players i know. We have a 24hr game coming up this weekend.

Unfortunately I'm in the same situation that alot of smart parts owners are. I already have the vests and up until I heard about all this crap I was actually looking forward to putting them through a whole game. I wont be buying anything else from them and I have actually removed our team from sponsorship negotiations. I am still however going to give the product a good going over and review. But I will add my comments regarding all this to the review.
