PostPosted: Thu Jan 02, 2014 9:18 pm    Post subject: I need a daily driver

Alright, a few years ago I bought a ford maverick that I've been fixing up and I'm now driving. I enjoy driving it and the work I've done has been easy, but there are quite a few problems I haven't been able to work on, and so this is why I'm posting this.

What would be the benefits of getting a newer car?

The Maverick is from 1975 so its 39 years old now. Its got 105,000 miles on it, the transmission is in need of work and there is a lot of rust here and there. It runs ok but I haven't put it above 55mph since I've been driving it because of a vibration from the drivetrain/transmission area. The trunk is rusted through 60% now, the body is dinged up here and there and rusting a little, there is a leak coming in from the rain gutter that is very expensive to fix because of the maintenance involved in fixing it. The front right axle hums when it goes into a turn ( bearing? ). I need to replace the springs, which I have bought the fronts, but not the backs.

I really enjoy this car, but I need something a little more reliable right now since ill be going to college shortly and need to be able to commute for hours at a time.

Any opinions?

the hum in the tranny(say that out loud!) is probably the tranny mount that's worn out. so as you go faster, its putting more stress on the rubber mount that is well, 39 years old.

dings are nothing, but get a some rust inhibitor. you apply it on the area that is rusty and it will stop the chemical process and prevent any further rusting. get some mohair(an auto parts store will know this) and use it on the gutter. its not a permanent fix, but it will stop it.

the front end. jack it up so that the tire in question is up off the ground. grab the tire and look at it like a compass, with the ground south and the car north. start with north and south and push pull it. if there is play, then its the ball joint. then east and west will tell you if its the tie-rod. if its humming while driving, it might be the bearing, but its hard to diag a car from 1500miles. i'm good, but not that good.

yes, get something that is born in this century. unless you plan on dropping in a 5.0 with a 9" rear and going out to play, put the maverick away. if you can drive stick, then it opens up all the cars. give a sob story, and you can either use mom and dad's car or show up in your POS Maverick and tell them why you want it. poor college kid will help with the payment. if you can afford it, a buy here pay here would be better, but you probably can't afford the down payment. so look at the want ads and put out feelers.

if you can find something that only needs a little work, if you can do it.

Not sure what price range you're looking in but in y opinion if you want a short term reliable car just lease a hyundai or something. best warrenty, great build, like $99/month for an elantra or accent or something and will reliably get you from a to b for as long as you want. Then when your done with college or whatever in 2-3 years just turn it back in.

Again not sure if you were interested in a lease or something like that but they arent what they used to be.

First and foremost, diagnose the front end noise. All of the issues Doug mentioned can cause serious damage if not taken care of. Complete tie rod or ball joint failure will cause you to wreck. Same for wheel bearings. If left unattended the bearing can seize onto the spindle, causing further damage. I have also seen cases of the entire front hub and wheel coming off at speed due to bad wheel bearings. Big mess.
Drivetrain vibrations could also be from bad u-joints, or in cases of extreme former abuse, bent drive shaft. Does it clunk when you put it gear?
I know Mavs are smaller cars, but if memory serves me, yours is a 4 door. It could have a 2 piece drive shaft and a carrier bearing. These fail quit often.

Yes, the car basically drops into gear. It either lurches forward or back depending on drive or reverse. I make sure the brakes are completely down all the way before I put it in gear. And even then it sometimes still lurches.

U joints have been replaced.

Mine is a two door.

the lurching sounds like a module in the transmission or the valve body could need a cleaning. i don't know transmissions that well. so its hard to diag it. but how is the idle? the lurching could even be from a high idle engaging the transmission before you want it. is it a stick or automatic? basically, there is a lot to worry about and we can sit here and play the guessing game, or you can realize that the 2 door is a perfect donor car for a hopped up 302 and a stick box, that you beat the hell out of it.

so put it away and get something decent and dependable. something that is not going to nickle or dime you that won't rust away or fall apart if you do the speed limit.

Diag?

It idles fine, just has to warm up first.

It's automatic.

diag(die-agg)= diagnose; just shorthand when you talk about figuring out what's wrong and how to fix things.

do you have a tachometer? if so, where is the tach at on idle? is it closer to 2000 than 1000? even though it idles fine, that idle might be up too high and you are engaging the torque converter early, so that imparts the the car to lurch when put into gear. it can be a simple fix(assuming you have a carburetor), like turning down the idle screw or adjusting out the throttle cable. newer cars its changing the TPS, as sensors can begin to get expensive.

No tach in this one.

Replaced the carb and had it set.
