Exactly - type in leaking, broken or as is in the paintball section of ebay and one or two usually pop up.

Smart Parts: another victim of the autotune.

Well, none the less, I've give props to whoever produced that. Pretty slick.

By the way, I was on the PBN hopper forum and came across a vid of an Ion doing 30+ bps. I kinda was like, "Hmmm....maybe I should get my hands on a Prophecy one of these days."

But no seriously, they're just another platform. Nothing wrong with some kids screwing up some pieces of Smart Parts plastic. Hopefully they learn something from it, get a better gun, and have an understanding of how to fix simple problems in the future.

Maloneoni, what do you say? You're an Ion owner, how do they compare to your 'styles?

everything on the freestyle is a piece of machined aluminum. the ion frame is cast and powder coated. nothing on an ion is anoed to a nice shiny color. i did not play a stock ion out of the box. i put a trigger, rail/asa, barrel, and a feed neck on it right out of the box. i did not feel that it was playable out of the box.

I don't think the ion's bad rap is smart part's fault. I mean, setting the patten mess aside. People who own shockers don't get the crap ion owners get. People with their stock/slightly upp'ed ion think that their marker is on par with high end markers are at fault for that. Yeah, an upped ion shoots nice, but it does not hold a candle to a dm. Again, setting smart parts politics aside, I feel that the ion has been a relatively positive trend for paintball. The idea of "tournament features" on a cheaper paintball gun. I don't know that to be 100% true, but I did not notice the surge of cheap markers until after the ion got bigger. Anyone buying a ion new these days is nuts though, with how cheap old top of the line markers have gotten.

the freestyle however, is very playable out of the box. i would not expect someone to use a stock barrel on any midrange marker. i threw my freak on it and already had a nox board when it showed up at my door step. i used my freak on it. the other parts are more for comfort and an extension of my ****.

you are right about the learning thing eeyore. i learned to work on and respect nicer markers with my ion. i went with an ion in 2005 or 2006 because i got the ion for 200 when they were still 250-300. i got all the other parts a wholesale pricing. at the time, it made good sense.

what i liked about it was i put each part onto my ion. it is kind of a reflection of my taste i guess. you would be hard pressed to find an ion exactly like mine. if the people i was playing with at the time had bushies, i would have done the same thing with a bushmaster.

with all that being said, the freestyle shoots smoother than my ion. it is more reliable once you know how to work on it. the freestyle does not have the same out of the box issues. i also like being the only person on the field at any given time with an icd product. I hardly use my ion anymore. It is more of a loaner gun now.

i may have more to say on the matter later. it is bedtime now.

Another thing that puts the fs over the ion: there are oring in the breech of the ion that are a straight up pain in the ass to change. The freestyle bolt system allows you to change the orings easily. Don't hold me to this, but I don't think smart parts ever offically realeased oring sizes for the ion.

As far as speed and efficiency are concerned, they are pretty evenly matched. My ion is butt ugly, even with the lucky 5.1 on it. Many if them are. Ions start to look nice when you really dump money into them, like ultralight frames. The fs looks pretty damn nice out of the box.
