i am looking to get into this. we perpetually have bridge work in the sf bay area. my neighbor is a pile driver foreman and i want him to hire me at his company.

Driving pile is not for the faint of heart, or for those that like to hear. I've driven some concrete pile, and that is loud when the hammer gets stroking. Money can be good, but if you follow the dollar, keep your suitcase packed.

in relation to piledriving:
i feel that i am up for the challenge. getting dirty never hurt my feelings and the noise...well, it goes with the territory. they are doing a new overpass about 2 miles from my house and i can hear the piledriver in the morning. it is an impressive sight...or sound to behold. the company that the neighbor works for mostly does bay area work, but he does get to do overnights to los angles.

i got an offer to work for a .com that sells cabinet hardware. the offer came from the dad in a family that the old lady used to nanny for. i would be taking over for the dad's father who wants to retire. i think that there is good money involved, but i would have to move up to the sacramento area. i am not sure if i want to relocate my family in progress that far away. i am sure that i will appreciate the help that my mother and fiance's mom and dad have to over come august.

the guy can be moody. i saw him get grumpy(like full on pms fit) with his wife before we all sat down to dinner. i hate working for people like that. i worked in a cabinet shop right out of high school. the damn foreman hated me and was moody like no man i have ever met. this is not an environment i want to revisit. i also swore off retail/sales/customer service. i deal with people just fine, but i happen to know that not only is the customer not always right, but he is also frequently a jerk.

the benefit to working there would be they are a small company(less than five people) and they want to go to about 20 people next year. if i got into this position i am being offered, it puts me in very good standing with a small company that is going to grow over the next few years. even through the though times that we are in, they have managed to expand their operations and sales.

i just dont see myself at a desk. most of the jobs that i have had have involved a hammer and nails. even when i worked retail, they figured out that i was the guy who knew how to build stuff. i does not really matter right now, but i would like to go into law enforcement. aint nobody hiring cops right now though.

i am also thinking about applying with the laborer's union as there is going to alot of work for them in the next few years. the caldecot tunnel is going to get another bore. i can dig a hole as good as the next guy.

advise?

Topic split because not only do we get off topic in the off topic section, this is a worthy topic.

If you want to be a pile guy, go for it, especially in a smaller company with a good owner. Be aware that the benefits may not be there until they grow, but if you are in good stead with the main man (or woman) the benefits will come.

i do like small companies. i think that your boss cares alot more about you when he knows you better. both the piledriving and the cabinet hardware would be for small companies.
