Well, I've got the cash so I'm about to purchase the neede parts for the initial rebuild. I actually got one of my buddies to commit to helping be replace the bellows. He is a retired boat mechanic so he said we can do it easy. He said work will be about 10hours and we can do it over a few nights.

I'm stoked. It looks like for the most part I'll probably have this baby in the H2O by fall. I'm stoked to say the least!

Ok, i ordered my parts and they will be here tomorrow. Yippee.

I have removed the Carb. I will disassemble tomorrow.

I need some help though. The gas tank is a zinc plated steel (or maybe aluminum, probably steel). I need to drain it but I cannot see an easy way of removing it. I'm likely going to have to "snake" some sort of tube down the fill tube and then create a syphon.....how the hell do I do that? I am not going to get a mouthful of gas!!

Thanks,
Nick

Well I got my two giant boxes of parts. I decided to start w/ the carb as it just seems like a good place to start.

I have been using my small point and shoot digital camera to record (w/ the video function) the process. Basically I'm making a digital record of the dis assembly. The thought is that if I leave it for a few days I can watch the videos to bring me back up to speed.

The carb has been successfully cleaned with denatured alcohol and blown out w/ an air compressor. All passages are clear and all old gasket material is cleaned off. I've begun the rebuild. I actually am taking video of this as well so that again, I can remember where I leave off and make sure that I don't leave out any tiny parts.

I should have the carb finished this weekend. I then will start on the out drive. I will have to first drain the gear oil. Then it will be onto the pump.

Fun!

Easy way to create a siphon:

Get enough hose/tubing to go from the bottom of the tank, out the top, then all the way to the ground. Slowly feed all the hose into the tank so that it fills with gas. Make sure you leave enough out to hold on to. Once you have it fed in and full, plug the top end of the hose. I usually fold it over and pinch it off with vice grips. Slowly draw the end out and place it in your waste container that must be below the bottom of your tank. Unplug the hose. If you haven't let air get back in the hose, it should start flowing. If that doesn't work, go buy a little manual transfer pump.

I'll try that. I may have to get the pump though. The only place I can get into the tank is from the fill hole which is a good distance away from the tank itself. It could be that there is also very little gas in there so I'll have to mess around and see what I can figure.

Thanks

The carb is finished. There were alot of little things that did need to be rebuilt but over all it was in good shape.

I have reattached it to the intake manifold and reattached the linkages. Everything moves nice and smoothly.

I did check, the fuel gauge says the tank is about 3/4 full. Pull the fuel lines and turned the engine over. Good news...the fuel pump does indeed work. So I will probably use some Stabil and burn simply burn the gas in the tank.

So tomorrow, I have to get some gear oil. Next step is to rebuild the water pump. Then I get to start the engine!!!!
