I was gently reminded of my enjoyment of tsing tao and Bohemia this weekend. weird culinary choices, but at least I had the beers to match.

What do you guys think of smoke beers or the sweeter/fruitier beers?
My friend & his brother have been brewing their own for years now and I've never tasted beer as good as some of the smoke batches they've made. Do any of you guys brew your own?

not much on the sweeter/fruitier barring the Honey Brown. More into the earthier flavors. Don't guess I've had a smoked beer, but now that I read up on it, it sounds interesting.
I've thought of brewing my own, but I burn water, why ruin something I like?

I have had some great smoked porters last year in maine. They were all local brew. I do brew about 3-4 batches of homebrew a year. Some are great and some are not.
If i drink a fruity beer it will be only in the summer time and either be magic Hat #9 or a newport storm or seadog blueberry.

I'd love to brew but the initial cost is a little more that I'm willing to spend (I'm more into making pickles and pickled hot peppers yum).
As far as smoked beer, I need to try this. I'll be going to the specialty stores in search this weekend.

^^Nick, the best smoke beer (besides my friend's home brew) I've been able to find was at a liquor store that carries imports. I have no idea what particular brand it was, because the label is all in German. But there were 3 'levels' of smokiness. The most smokey had a red label, then blue for the middle, and green for the least.
I love the smoked beers as they remind me of raking leaves as a kid (fun times). That and my brother and I used play, "let's see who has the balls to run through the fire pit while the leaves are burning" game....
IMO, smoke porters and the like are the best with any type of smoked food - pork, sausage, gouda cheese, etc. But my favorite is that type of beer w/smoked salmon.
