Took the Celica to our monthly Vintage Jap Car meet on Sunday.
This was the first public appearance of my 74 RA21. Still a work in progress, but little by little we'll get there!

Under the hood...

On the way there Sunday and when I drove it to work the Friday before, it was getting hot while driving with my foot in it on the freeway. Around town driving was ok but driving at 75+ on the highway there was just too much heat the radiator couldnt get rid of.

Has a new radiator, waterpump, all new hoses, fresh coolant, new T-stat etc... what could it be?

Did some poking around on the internetz and discovered timing can effect the rate you build heat, particularly if you are not getting proper advance at higher RPMs. (No laughs from those of you that already knew that... shut it.. ) I discovered my Vacuum Advance was not working. Sucking on the line got movement on it but hooking up a gage to the vac port it was hooked up to was not showing any vacuum. I hunted around on the intake manifold for a good steady vac source and once hooked up properly the advance was working like a champ. A bit more tweaking with the initial timing and the octane selector had it purring like a kitten at idle and screaming like a banshee on the highway. Was getting the tires to chirp in 3rd... hey it's a 30+ year old 4cyl! That's something! The car feels signifigantly more healthy and pulls harder at all RPMs now.

PLUS IT STAYS COOL ON THE FREEWAY! So far at least...

I drove to work this morning with my foot in it as much as I could with traffic and it never went past the 170-175F mark.... Happy so far.

hey, my pick me up truck that i did a 4.6 V8 swap would barely chirp any of the tires. so you chirping in 3rd, is nice, no matter the age.

now, you need to find someone with a gen 1 VW GTI and do a race. that would be awesome to watch.

lol... might be fun! My Celica was originally an automatic. I did a 5 spd swap in it but left the same rearend gears. In the autos Toyota put shorter rearend gears in these to compensate for the slushbox 3spd. So I have all the "Giddyup" but my top end suffers considerably. My speedo gear is also incorrect for the gearbox/diff combo, it says I'm doing 110 when I'm going like 80 Wink

running good. only drag is since it's got old twin side draft carbs I have to adjust them as the seasons change or the idle gets sloppy.
