hmmm... Go ahead and shoot me a pm. School starts on Monday, so we will talk about it.

Popcorn ceilings are fun. You finish with a big bag of asbestos.

Edit: Ha. I found this picture from a little more than a year ago. A big bag of asbestos! That is only from one room too.

ASE Master Cetified Auto Tech, Chrysler Master Certified. Wish the ecconomy would pick up. They lied to me when I was in Tech School. Said I would be making +$60K a year. Only made $27k last year. Warrenty don't pay worth a hoot. And cust pay is good pay, but noone wants to do Prevenative service. they would rather wait till it breaks then fix it.

Hey VDub your Company need any Help, LOL

mustangii: you aren't getting any work cause no one buys Chryslers anymore. Laughing

seriously, you really need to sell yourself as well as the work. you make the contacts, and if you're good, you can ask one person, and do the side work. you really have to tell the people that the breaks are worse then they are, and the lines will break. no one wants to hear that they are driving a death trap, but if you do a little white lie and speed up their minds on spending the money, it works out for all. hell, just telling people that you can give them the work at less than it would cost would at the shop. if they think they are saving money by using you, you get the work.

my friend who's a mechanic was telling me that after doing a welding job for this guy, before Christmas, the guy owns a concrete company and my friend got this guys contract for work. basically stealing the work from his own job. granted, my friend is also a master welder, ASC Underbody tech, works on all the diesels at his work, so he can do the bigger F450s and up, diesels and all. he sold the job, and he is only loosing the free time. guess it pays to have a lift at his home. as well as all the side work.

I'd do side work too if I had a place to do it. I live in a mobile home on rented property. I do all the diesel work too. Noone else wants to do it at the shop. I am looking for a new job, the biggest problem is I am in a small town shop. I live in Warrensburg MO, but work in Marshall MO. 50 miles one way. The shop I was working at closed and I had to find a job quick, was working 3 days after I was told the shop was closing. But What I realy miss from there is the 30 hr garentee and $25.00 an hour. The other guys have been on unemployment since Sept of 09. I can't stand being on unemployment, did it when I lived down at the Lake of the Ozarks when I was younger. Then it was work 8 months then sit on unemployment for 4 months. On top Of that I am 52 years old and Have 4 grandkids I rather spend time with. Also involved in the BSA, so I am busy. Did side work when the kids were young. don't feel like I should have to now.

didn't know your age, and i totally understand the feeling. like most mechanics i know, they hate working on cars all day, then coming home and working on them in their free time. so i can understand the importance of your spare time in relation to your situation.

don't know the area(live in NJ), but to me, if the shop isn't giving you enough, i would look around other places. if you have the certs, that would be big for some shops that are busier and don't have the ACS(learned that AAA wants/needs ASC mechanics for AAA cert for towing and repairs) or are in need of your skill set. it doesn't hurt to look around. might not be what you want, but you never know what is arounf the corner.

Wow. Great idea for a thread! It's nice to know you guys! I am a semi-pro musician, bass player on weekends. My day job is a Nuclear Process Control technician. I test and monitor all the functions of the shutdown safety systems on our (Ontario Canada's) nuclear reactors. Pay is great, work is great, spare time..... not any more. Sad Haven't played paintball in 3 months. I'm so ashamed.
