Well, crap. I started smoking cigarrettes...

I don't post in OT much, but I know some of you guys smoke or use to smoke. Any tips on how to limit myself to at most 1 cigarette a day? What did you guys do that helped take your mind off smoking?

since you just started, it hasn't become your daily ritual, so just don't buy any. it is easier to say than do, but its simple as that. the more that you do smoke, whether its in the car, after dinner, while drinking, or whatever. smoking, IMO, has a lot to do with habitualness or association. if you don't associate it with anything, then its easier to break the habit. and when someone says you want to join you for a smoke, just say no.

if you want it, then you don't need it. if you need it, then you don't want it.

I smoke, I love to smoke. But no joke I hate smelling like smoke, it is literally the worst smell other than people who use Toms Deoderant and soap!!

That being said cigarettes are a waste of time and money, you are smoking just paper soaked in an array of chemicals some of which is actually tobacco oil. They cost waaaayyy too much for what they are. If you are looking for a nice enjoyable smoke that has a great taste you should look into a nice cigar brand and type and/or pipe tobacco. These types of tobacco products are actual tobacco and there are several different types of tobacco plants and wonderful blends that all taste and burn differently.

I smoke only a couple of times a month, I can smoke alot more but smoke all I want and the stress of life are still there when Im done. I smoke because I actually enjoy the aroma of a nice pipe and the taste.

I'm the same way adam. I enjoy a good cigar, but i can't stand how they make you smell afterwards, and the next day when you wake up

Oh I know right! you brush your teeth and wash your face, hands, and hair and no matter what you still have that weird taste in the back of your mouth.

Yeah, the best thing for you to do is to just stop. 1 a day isn't possible. I mean, you'l start out one a day, and then it will turn into "Well, i mean, what's two a day?" and so on. Eventually you'll end up a half a pack type of guy.

exactly. i love the feeling, even the look, when the smoke is billowing out at night, how it has a life of its own. the smell, the feeling afterwards, the expense(calculate it out. even if you smoke once a day, that's still 19 packs a year, and $133 plus any lighters and such). it might not be much, but when you get to the point of a pack a day, or more, then it reaches into the thousands and all that money, literally goes up in smoke.

if you want, go to cigars, go to pipes, hell a nice hookah is better than cigarettes(plus its kind a hard to pack a hookah to go out to a bar)..

1 day isnt possible for almost everyone, I smoke about 3-4 cigs a week, 1 in the morning and im done......it helps that it is 110 out here and it makes me feel sick to smoke out in that heat. But I have been very very fortunate that even when I smoked more regularly years ago and never had that nicotine itch making me smoke, I did it social situations and when I drank(usually those coincided)

I completely agree about the smell, while I enjoy the occasional smoke I HATE the smell it leaves on me afterward, if I am home I wash my hands face and change my shirt if possible afterward.

In the end I agree you should just stop while your ahead, bumming one occasionally while drunk is one thing, buying a pack just enables you to smoke more often. I think I have smoked 3 times in the last month or so.

Did anybody watch shark week?

If you get a chance, watch "47 Days Adrift With Sharks."

Well, I tested myself this week. I didn't smoke a single cigarette all week, and I had absolutely no nicotine craving. I did have an urge to smoke, but not craving for that nicotine buzz.

I guess I'm just lucky?

For now, haha. As long as you have the willpower to really only smoke 1 a day, then you should be fine. But one you start escalating, then you're done for, haha.

My theory (unconfirmed) is that smoking isn't inherently bad for you. Just the volume does people in. I mean, if you did anything as much as smokers smoke, you will develop cancer. If you ate 20 carrots a day, every day for 40 years, you'll probably develop some problems.
